ABSS has made progress in financial management, academic performance, and operational efficiency. I am running for re-election because the next step is to move beyond crisis management and concentrate on the long-term needs of our schools while maintaining the progress we have made.” - Charles

About Charles

Charles is a native of North Carolina. He attended high school at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM), where he met his wife, Mary. They have been married for 27 years and have three children, Andrew, Catherine, and Margaret. He graduated from NC State in 2002 with a Ph.D. and an M.B.A., then settled in Mebane in 2003. His focus on local schools has grown since 2010, when his son, Andrew, entered kindergarten. Andrew and Catherine attended ABSS schools through 10th grade before going to NCSSM. Margaret is a sophomore at Southeast Alamance High School. Charles is an Eagle Scout.

He has worked at Duke University since 2003 and is a member of the undergraduate lab staff in the Department Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is also a research scientist on projects funded by federal agencies, including the National Science Foundation.

His family has focused on giving back to the community, especially through volunteering at their children’s schools, for more than 16 years. As a member of the Board of Education, he has focused on academic excellence, transparent governance, and ensuring that teachers and staff have the tools to serve students well.

Priorities for ABSS

1. Improve student achievement

ABSS is making progress, but we have further to go. Our work is not finished until every student has access to excellent instruction and the support needed to succeed. I will keep the focus on strong classroom teaching, early help for students who are struggling, and rigorous opportunities that prepare students for college, careers, and life.

2. Support great educators and staff

Students succeed when schools can recruit and retain excellent people. I will advocate for competitive local supplements, stronger support for teachers and staff, and the instructional positions that help educators meet the needs of every student.

3. Plan responsibly for growth

Alamance County is growing, and ABSS must be ready. I will support long-term planning for new capacity, maintenance, safety, and infrastructure using data, careful budgeting, and transparent cooperation with county leaders and the community.

While pursuing these priorities, I will maintain the progress ABSS has made in financial management and operational efficiency. Families, employees, and taxpayers deserve clear information about how district resources are managed, expect responsible long-term planning, and want schools that are safe, well maintained, and ready to support learning.
